Project proposal.
The first six units of the course consisted of very broad based projects. Working on these projects have given me a very different mind-set to the way I can work, which I previously didn’t have as I was use to going down a specific path. These units have enabled me to broaden my ideas and experiment with materials, processes which I have found very beneficial to further work. The cardboard project gave me ideas about body ornamentation designs and I was encouraged to come out of my comfort zone and explore with the placements of the body ornamentation such as covering the face instead of just the waist. Colour theory allowed me to experiment and match colours that I once thought would never work together, broadening my understanding of how effective the right colours can be together. Heat press technology showed another method of combining materials. Subsequent projects allowed me to branch off and work experimentally instead of following a very specific brief allowing me freedom and independence in the way I could work. Each of these projects have given me insight and knowledge to ways which I could improve future work. In ‘A sense of place’ project I worked with textiles by using materials and embellishing them together, I found this to create very beautiful surfaces and effects. I chose to go down the pathway of combined media as it’s an area I hadn’t explored before, I wanted to further my knowledge of different areas before I went to university. As I want to study jewellery I think this area allows me to form more dramatic body ornamentation.
For this project my inspiration comes from sea scape and I would like to produce some sort of body ornamentation which showcases the body as well as the work. I will start out by researching certain artists such as Sean Scully, Patrick Heron and Richard Diebenkorn, who work with abstract expressionism inspired by landscapes. This will ignite initial ideas on developing the piece. Also research into what materials to use needs to be taken place such as fabric, card and paper? To discover which material is more effective and what strengthens the fabric and materials to make them more robust and rigid to allow them to hold a specific form. I will explore structures and form experimentally. I wish to include methods learnt previously in the last six units such as using the heat press to experiment with blending the colours. I want colour to be a depicting part in this project. I may present the project realisation in the form of photographs as the body ornamentation may be displayed/worn in the environment which gave me the inspiration. However, I may use a mannequin to showcase the work next to the photographs. However, in the response to the evolution of my ideas or the availability of facilities or materials, I may make decisions which result in changes to the projects concept and aims. If any process of change is made I will document it in the work itself and through supporting records such as annotation and the blog or a personal reflective diary, explaining fully why the change has taken place.
Evaluation is critical whether it’s on-going annotation or a summary of the conclusion of the project. It allows me to reflect on ideas which may have prompted me to make a particular decision and allows me to analyse the development of the work such as what went well, what’s effective and what’s not so effective and why? My annotations will not just be a description of what I have done but it will be analytical of learning and of the achievements made. Continuous annotations will be made in my blog after each day in the studio and in my sketchbook showing the progression of ideas. It would also be beneficial to record feedback from the tutors and students in what they think of the work and how it could be improved. The evaluation and annotations will always refer back to the projects stated aims. I will also provide a final written evaluation after the completion of the project.
